If you have a cedar roof on your home now, it is very important for you to realize that the material you choose when you re-roof your home must be within the weight constraints of cedar.

Generally when a cedar roof is replaced, the roofing material used will likely be cedar, asphalt (fibreglass laminate), metal roofing or one of the environmentally friendly recycled products. Heavy materials such as concrete or clay tile are too heavy for a house designed to have a cedar roof.

Beyond the weight concern, what roofing product you choose will be a personal choice based on:

• Appearance
• Local covenants
• Durability
• Weather resistance
• Warranty period

When a cedar roof is converted to asphalt (fibreglass laminate), plywood must be laid first to provide a platform for the shingles. Due to this factor, ventilation must be seriously considered. Check your local building codes to determine what minimum requirements need to met or exceeded. Soffit ventilation is key to a healthy roof, so make sure they are adequately opened.

A fairly new concept in roof ventilation are ridge cap vents, little plastic frames that hold the ridge caps up slightly to allow air flow. An excellent investment.

No matter what products you choose, it is always critical to ensure that you actually need a new roof and the roofing contractor you choose is properly experienced and insured to provide you with the best possible end result.

After the roofer is gone, is not the time to check his credentials. Make sure your roofer has active Workers Compensation, Liability insurance. If an uninsured worker is injured on your property, your homeowners insurance will bear the cost.
